The LSU Health Shreveport Library in Shreveport, Louisiana has been fortunate enough to have another library position approved.  This is an entry level position for a Data Services and Reference Librarian. The position will provide data services management in support of the research endeavors of the LSUHS campus and provide reference assistance. The position requires a master’s degree (MLS, MLIS, MALS, etc.) from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited school of Library and/or Information Science with health science reference classes or experience. In addition, they must know or be willing to learn R (most likely R) or SPSS to teach and have experience in data management or willingness to learn.

This is an entry level faculty position within the library.

The Louisiana State University Health Shreveport (LSUHS) Library seeks a motivated, collaborative, and service-oriented Data Services and Reference Librarian to provide leadership and expertise in data management in the support of research endeavors of the LSUHS campus and provide reference assistance.

Job responsibilities will Include but not limited to:

 Regular attendance is required to perform the functions of this position. Incumbent will maintain a customer-oriented awareness in acknowledging and responding to needs as they occur that customer satisfaction is met at all times.

 

Essential Position Functions & Duties

40% Data Management Functions

  1. Finds, interprets, and manages data according to ethical principles.
  2. Critically appraises data and data collection methods.
  3. Collects and uses knowledge of institutional and research context to initiate institutionally relevant data services.
  4. Evaluates and expands upon existing data services by developing partnerships and becoming integrated into the institutional research environment.
  5. Provides guidance on generalizable, domain-agnostic research data practices.
  6. Identifies and implements domain-specific research data best practices.
  7. Applies a basic understanding of scientific method and ethical and sound research practices to data-related problems, encouraging open science practices when appropriate.
  8. Applies specialized knowledge of one or more scientific disciplines and research methods to advanced, domain-specific data-related problems.
  9. Develops and delivers instruction to enhance data literacy and skills.
  10. Provides customized discipline- and context-specific training on advanced data-related topics, including those requiring computational approaches.
  11. Teach R or SPSS courses when possible.

40% Reference Duties

  1. Provides assistance with questions regarding library resources or services.
  2. Answers difficult and complex questions for students, faculty, and staff regarding multiple library resources.
  3. Conducts comprehensive searches in online databases that may include systematic reviews.
  4. When needed, works one-on-one or in small groups with students, faculty, and staff.

 10% Faculty Duties

  1. Serves as a liaison to assigned departments or programs, consistent with established liaison program guidelines.
  2. Assists other faculty with classes and small-group activities.
  3. Participates in state, regional and national professional organizations in order to maintain knowledge of library information trends and advancements.
  4. Develops grant proposals.
  5. Looks for potential research ideas multiple faculty can take part in.
  6. On an occasional basis, writes newsletter or journal articles.

 Non-Essential Position Functions & Duties

10% Marginal Functions

Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
