On behalf of the NNLM Reading Club team, we are pleased to announce the March 2025 theme, Eldercare.

This month we are pleased to be featuring three new books specific to Eldercare as it relates to Caregiving and Caregivers:

  * Ladysitting: My Year with Nana at the End of Her Century<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.nnlm.gov/reading-club/book/ladysitting__;!!GNU8KkXDZlD12Q!73OO7HPCozMRUqiBLP00pjfMoCPWLPvlejEvrPi5yuwokmaZQaISqVoJBo7M5EcbmUR3oEGy393micMJ893-ON4jF_JKH_Q2$ [nnlm[.]gov]> by Lorene Cary
  * A Cup of Tea On The Commode: My Multi-Tasking Adventures Of Caring For Mom And How I Survived To Tell The Tale<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.nnlm.gov/reading-club/book/cup-tea-commode__;!!GNU8KkXDZlD12Q!73OO7HPCozMRUqiBLP00pjfMoCPWLPvlejEvrPi5yuwokmaZQaISqVoJBo7M5EcbmUR3oEGy393micMJ893-ON4jFx0v7mHh$ [nnlm[.]gov]> by Mark Steven Porro
  * Polar Vortex: A Family Memoir <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.nnlm.gov/reading-club/book/polar-vortex__;!!GNU8KkXDZlD12Q!73OO7HPCozMRUqiBLP00pjfMoCPWLPvlejEvrPi5yuwokmaZQaISqVoJBo7M5EcbmUR3oEGy393micMJ893-ON4jF8Tnacrf$ [nnlm[.]gov]> by Denise Dorrance

A caregiver<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://medlineplus.gov/caregivers.html__;!!GNU8KkXDZlD12Q!73OO7HPCozMRUqiBLP00pjfMoCPWLPvlejEvrPi5yuwokmaZQaISqVoJBo7M5EcbmUR3oEGy393micMJ893-ON4jFwRxHRJC$ [medlineplus[.]gov]> gives care to someone who needs help taking care of themselves. The person who needs help may be a child, an adult, or an older adult.

Caregiving can be rewarding. It may help to strengthen connections to a loved one. However, caregiving may also be stressful and sometimes even overwhelming. Taking care of your own physical and mental health is important. Because when you feel better, you can take better care of your loved one.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.cdc.gov/healthy-aging-data/media/pdfs/caregiver-brief-508.pdf__;!!GNU8KkXDZlD12Q!73OO7HPCozMRUqiBLP00pjfMoCPWLPvlejEvrPi5yuwokmaZQaISqVoJBo7M5EcbmUR3oEGy393micMJ893-ON4jFzkMB0D1$ [cdc[.]gov]>, 1 in 5 adults in the United States are now caregivers, which is growing as the population ages. According to U.S. Census Projections<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www2.census.gov/programs-surveys/popproj/tables/2023/2023-summary-tables/np2023-t2.xlsx__;!!GNU8KkXDZlD12Q!73OO7HPCozMRUqiBLP00pjfMoCPWLPvlejEvrPi5yuwokmaZQaISqVoJBo7M5EcbmUR3oEGy393micMJ893-ON4jF1bwmcL5$ [census[.]gov]>, by 2030, people 65 and older will outnumber those 18 and under. Projections indicate that this will continue with a growing gap. By 2040 projections indicate 19% of the population will be under 18 and 22% over 65. Almost 4% of the population is projected to be 85 or older. Given these numbers, attention to healthy aging and caregiver resources are more important than ever.

We would like to thank our NNLM Reading Club Advisory Group which is made up of NNLM Members who worked together to choose this topic, select the three books we are featuring this month, and to develop book discussion guides.

Books and health information resources are available on our Reading Club website: Eldercare<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.nnlm.gov/reading-club/topic/341__;!!GNU8KkXDZlD12Q!73OO7HPCozMRUqiBLP00pjfMoCPWLPvlejEvrPi5yuwokmaZQaISqVoJBo7M5EcbmUR3oEGy393micMJ893-ON4jF9fOljBH$ [nnlm[.]gov]>
